Automotive sector in favour of relocating car manufacturing to UK
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has said a relocation of car manufacturing back to the UK would be “good news” for the sector.
“If supply chain resilience provides the opportunity to reshore more of the supply chain in the UK, we would certainly support and encourage that,” SMMT’s chief executive Mike Hawes told City A.M.
According to Hawes, a successful reshoring of automotive production back to Britain depends on whether there is a strong and healthy car production as well as the level of competitiveness.
“Being competitive is about making the right products that are in demand and being able to make them as cheaply as possible, but to high levels of quality and flexibility,” he added.

UK on track to reach 4,000 zero emission bus pledge with £200 million boost
Millions of people across the country will be able to make greener, cleaner journeys as almost 1,000 green buses are rolled out with the backing of nearly £200m in government funding.
Twelve areas in England, from Greater Manchester to Portsmouth, will receive grants from the multimillion-pound package to deliver electric or hydrogen powered buses, as well as charging or fuelling infrastructure, to their region.
The funding comes from the Zero Emission Buses Regional Area (ZEBRA) scheme, which was launched last year to allow local transport authorities to bid for funding to purchase zero emission buses. This latest investment of £198.3m will provide 943 buses
The new age of the engineering data scientist is here
Artificial intelligence, Engineering, and Data Science used to be different disciplines with little overlap, but now these specialist domains are rapidly converging. Engineers hold the key to capitalising on the potential of AI across the manufacturing sector.
Nowadays product development and simulation engineering teams have access to a wealth of data that should be informing their product design and manufacturing processes. This means that engineers must be able to harness AI, Machine Learning (ML), and data analytics to support and accelerate better decision-making, reduce time to market, and design more efficient products.
